PE, School Sport and Physical Activity at Prospect Vale – Summer term 2024

As this year has been the first year I have been able to work with every class, every week, it has meant that we have ensured the children are getting their twice weekly PE lessons and lots of opportunities to get outside and be as active as possible. More additional special events and activities have also taken place this term than ever before, so the children have had lots of opportunities to enjoy plenty of physical activity and competitive sports.

  • In Early Years – Nursery and reception – when they have managed to dodge the rain, they have made the most of our fantastic outdoor space. Plenty of work on extending and developing gross motor skills have taken place by using the outdoor playground equipment, running on the school field and using bats, balls, hoops and bean bags. We have had fun sports day style games and football and the children have had the opportunity to work with the older children and sports leaders.
  • Year 1 – the class have focused on athletics and games. They took part in ‘The big leap’ which involved jumping for speed, length and height. We enjoyed basic team games which encouraged working together and encouraging fairness and sportsmanship. We worked on skills involved in games such as aiming, throwing and catching a ball and striking objects with a bat. Working on target games, the children developed their understanding of the principles of defending and attacking. Year 1 learned to use both underarm and overarm actions and were given opportunities to select and apply the appropriate action for the target considering the size and distance of the challenge.
  • Year 2 – the class have had lessons in athletics and games. The children have worked hard on developing their fundamental ball skills such as throwing, catching, rolling, hitting a target, dribbling with both hands and feet and kicking. They have performed these skills with increasing control and accuracy using co-ordination and balance. In athletics the children have been developing skills required in athletic activities such as running at different speeds, jumping and throwing. They are developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and beginning to apply these in a range of activities. Year 2 have also worked with Mrs Wall.
  • Year 3 – have had lessons in athletics and been swimming weekly on a Friday. The children have been taught how to travel, float and submerge with increasing confidence. They have learned, and some have used, different kicking and arm actions. They children have been introduced to some personal survival skills and how to stay safe around water. In athletics the children have developed running, jumping and throwing techniques. They have been set challenges for distance and time that involve using different styles and combinations of running, jumping and throwing. As in all athletic activities, the children have had to think about how to achieve their greatest possible speed, distance or accuracy and learned how to persevere to achieve their personal best.
  • Year 4 – have had lessons in athletics and games – net/wall and striking and fielding. In athletics we have learned how to develop stamina and an understanding of speed and pace in relation to distance. We have developed technique when jumping for distance, length and speed and have learned to develop power and technique when throwing for distance. In a number of different games, the children have had the opportunity to develop a variety of ball skills without the restrictions of specific rules related to well-known games. They have been developing their accuracy and consistency when tracking a ball, have explored a variety of throwing techniques and learned how to select the appropriate throw for the situation. They have worked on catching with one and two hands as well as dribbling with feet and hands. These skills have been applied to small group games.
  • Year 5 – have had athletics lessons learning different activities - long distance running, sprinting, relay, triple jump, shot put and javelin! They have looked at pace, speed and stamina and identified areas of strength and weakness. They have been set challenges for distance and time that involve using different styles and combinations of running, jumping and throwing. Year 5 have also had games lessons, looking at different sorts of games including net/wall and striking and fielding. When learning cricket the pupils have developed their understanding of the principles of striking and fielding. They have expanded their knowledge of the different roles of bowler, wicket keeper, fielder and batter. As in all games activities, pupils have to think about how they use skills, strategies and tactics to outwit the opposition and Year 5 have worked incredibly hard on this element. They have been given opportunities to work in collaboration with others, play fairly demonstrating an understanding of the rules, as well as being respectful of the people they play with and against.
  • Year 6 – have focused on developing similar skills to Year 5 and have worked alongside them on occasions. In athletics they have had lessons learning long distance running, short distance running, triple jump, javellin and shot put. They have worked on pace and sprinting technique and power, control and technique in jumping. They have used running, jumping and throwing in isolation and in combination and developed flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance. Year 6 have looked at different types of games (Net/wall & striking and fielding) and developed their understanding of the principles of them. In all games activities, pupils have to think about how they use skills, strategies and tactics to outwit the opposition and Year 6 have worked at this. They have had the opportunity to work co-operatively with others as well as independently and are able to lead and officiate showing honesty and fair play whilst abiding by the rules. The pupils have developed their tactical awareness, learning how to outwit an opponent when playing individually and with a partner.

Partnership with Stockport SHAPES & team teach with Mrs Wall

Our strong partnership has continued with SHAPES and Mrs Wall has been able to offer CPD to 5 different members of staff this academic year. I have been able to attend every Stockport PE leads meeting and had weekly team teach time which has offered extra PE and sport time to most children in school. This half term alongside Mrs Wall, we have been able to teach extra OAA, athletics and team games alongside special events like our ‘Olympic torch relay’!
