PE and Sport at Prospect Vale – Spring term 2024

*This year has been the first year at PV I have been able to focus solely on PE and school sports and meant that I have been able to split classes for more effective teaching in smaller groups*

  • In Nursery, we have spent a lot of time on Thursdays using the apparatus in the hall. The children have worked really hard developing their confidence in travelling, balancing, climbing and jumping. Daily (weather permitting!) we use the great outdoor area we have here at PV to explore our gross motor skills. Nursery always start the morning with a ‘wake up- shake up’ so they are always active 😊
  • In Reception we are continuing working those fundamental skills and really progressing the basics – different ways to move, balance, climb and dismount. The children have displayed greater confidence as we increased the size and height of the apparatus. The children have began to show their maturity as they organise themselves, getting changed and dressed for PE and helping others. We also started looking at games and basic ball skills.
  • Year 1 have been progressing their gymnastic skills further and have worked hard on climbing, balance and travelling. We have introduced the large equipment, including the big blue climbing frame.

Year 1 had dance sessions with Mrs Wall and created and performed a wonderful ‘Bob, the man on the moon’ dance. Some children even performed this in front of other schools at a SHAPES dance festival held here at PV. We worked on games – using balls and small equipment, a big focus on playing fairly, following rules and taking turns. Marianne from Cheshire cricket club was in weekly to deliver sessions.

  • Year 2 have focused on progressing gymnastics, yoga and dance. We looked at how to make up a ‘Wake-up, shake-up’ routine in small groups. The children choreographed their own moves and performed this for other classes. They have shown a greater sense of rhythm to fit their moves in time to the beat. The children have used the larger apparatus and worked together to design and set up their own sequences. Their gymnastic floor work is progressing well. As Year 1, Year 2 also worked on using balls and small equipment, a big focus on playing fairly, following rules and taking turns. Marianne from Cheshire cricket club was in weekly to deliver sessions.
  • Year 3 focused on gymnastics and dance. They advanced their floor skills and constructed and performed sequences both in pairs and in small groups. They also looked at safe handling, setting up and use of apparatus. Marianne from Cheshire cricket club took weekly sessions on a Monday and the children’s skills and participation hugely improved. Year 3 also had the opportunity to work with Mrs Wall and constructed and performed a Stone-age dance.
  • Year 4 have worked on progressing their gymnastic skills and making up advanced sequences in pairs and in small groups. They have used apparatus effectively and know how to handle the equipment safely. Year 4 have also had weekly cricket sessions with Cheshire cricket. Year 4 also attended weekly swimming lessons in Spring 1.
  • Year 5 progressed their gymnastics skills. They worked on group sequences and advanced balances and movement. They used apparatus which they set up themselves safely. Year 5 also had weekly sessions with Cheadle lacrosse club and attended weekly swimming lessons in Spring 2.
  • Year 6 continued to work gymnastics and fitness. They used apparatus and learned how to safely handle equipment. They worked on sequences in pairs and small groups and also looked at warming muscle groups up. Year 6 also had weekly lacrosse lessons with Cheadle lacrosse club and had a weekly session with Toby from Stockport County FC.

Friday whole school wake-up-shake-up takes place before school in the playground every week.

  • 35 children from Year 1 – Year 6 were selected to represent Prospect Vale at the Stockport SHAPES annual RISE gymnastics competition, held at Stockport gymnastics club. All the children performed brilliantly and were a credit to PV. It was a fabulous morning and gave the children an opportunity to perform in a ‘real’ gymnastics club!
  • SHAPES hosted a dance festival here at PV and a group of Year 1’s performed their Spaceman dance.
  • Marianne Lea from Cheshire cricket board delivered cricket lessons for pupils in Year 1 – 4 and held Allstar-cricket after school club.
  • Our Girls football leadership team organised and delivered the annual Girls only football day ‘letgirlsplay’ across the whole school doing mini skills sessions from Nursery to Year 6
  • Following the girls sessions, our Sports leaders delivered a similar day of activities for the boys and did a full day of football skills for the boys from Nursery to Year 6.
  • Toby from Stockport County FC worked with Year 5 and Year 6 delivering lessons in the classroom about online safety, then did football skills sessions.
  • Cheadle lacrosse came in to deliver sessions with Years 2 – 6. A Y5/6 team were selected to represent PV at Cheadle Kingsway club Primary schools cluster competition.
  • 10 girls attended a girls only football festival held at Manchester City FC.
  • 10 boys were selected to represent PV at a football festival held at MCFC.

Mrs Wall has continued to come into school on a Wednesday and does a series of Teach team activities with myself, alongside CPD for selected staff members.

We continue to be busy after school –

  • KS1 Cheerleading and dance and All-stars cricket with CCCB on Monday.
  • Football club on Tuesday with Toby from SCFC.
  • Dodgeball on Wednesday with progressive sports.
  • KS2 Cheerleading on Thursday.
  • Multi-skills with PS on Friday.
