PE and Sport at P.V – Spring term – January - March 2021

(Once again we were plunged into lockdown and schools were closed to all children except essential workers and children with specified needs!)

Children in school were educated in class bubbles and the children at home were following Prospect Vale’s home learning programme of work. We continued to encourage as much Physical Activity as possible providing opportunities for our children attending school daily and also for our children who were not in school. For the children attending school, they were offered opportunities daily to use the outside space in their bubbles with some equipment, observing social distancing and guidelines to remain safe in the current climate. Weekly challenges were being sent home and put on the school website and children were encouraged to share the activities they had done with me via their class home learning email.

When all the children returned, the focus remained on allowing as much time as possible for the children to get outside and be physically active. PE lessons resumed fully (outside) Mrs O’Hare continued to come into school on a Wednesday and our Sports Coach Andrew is in school every lunchtime.

Here’s a brief story of some of the PE and sport that has been happening across school…..

In Nursery and Reception the Focus always remains on basic fundamental skills. The children time to progress their gross motor skills with lots of music and movement, climbing, balancing and outdoor play.

  • Fundamental skills - locomotor and non-locomotor skills — rolling, balancing, sliding, jogging, running, leaping, jumping, hopping, dodging, galloping and skipping.

  • Object control skills — bouncing, throwing, catching, kicking, striking.

In Year 1 the children have been working on large ball skills and games, ball handling, kicking, dribbling and stopping. They have also looked at styles of dance and constructed their very own Zumba routine!

In Year 2 there has also been a large focus on ball skills and ball handling. They have built up a variety of skills and been enjoying lots of lessons in games. Year 2 have also taken part in athletics, relay races and team running and they are the ‘Smile for a mile’ Champions and continue to build up huge amounts of laps of the playground weekly!

In Year 3 they have been doing a lot of team building games and learning some great racket and ball control skills in tennis.

In Year 4 they have been working really hard on their target skills in archery and increasing their physical fitness in a range of fitness sessions. They have also started racket and ball control in tennis.

In Year 5 they have worked on racket and ball skills in tennis and controlling the ball with a stick in Hockey. Year 5 have particularly enjoyed the hockey!

In Year 6 they have worked hard on their cooperation and team skills in completing Orienteering lessons. They have used the outside facilities brilliantly to be as physically active as possible. Year 6 have also had tennis and hockey lessons particularly focusing on safe ball control skills.

At the current time, there are no Extra-curricular school clubs running on the premises but our children are strongly encouraged to take part in as much physical activity as they can. We are hoping these can recommence as soon as it is safe to do so.

Stay safe, Stay Active.
